FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How many times can I reuse the mask?

Face masks can be re-used up to 3 times following proper decontamination procedures.
The mask should not be reused if you go to the hospital or if you have been in contact with an infected patient or if you are suspected to be infected.

How do I disinfect the KN95 mask?

Here are recommended decontamination procedures for face masks:
  • For alternate use (if you have several masks available), store the mask in its own bag for several days after each use to allow the virus to die. (Researchers have found that coronavirus can survive on the outside of face masks for up to 7 days.)
  • For quick decontamination, you can do any of the following:
        - Place the mask in an oven at 160°F (70°C) for 30 to 60 minutes.
        - Put it in a steam basket over (NOT IN) boiling water for 10 minutes
        - Expose both sides of the mask in a UV sterilizer (40W, two feet away)
DO NOT use alcohol or bleach to try and disinfect the mask as these can reduce filtration efficiency.

When should I discard the mask?

  • If it no longer fits your face properly, it must be discarded.
  • If it's difficult to breathe with the face mask on, discard it.
  • If the mask has come into contact with alcohol or chlorine, it must be discarded.

How to properly discard the mask?

Put the mask inside a plastic bag and place it in the garbage bin. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling any used face masks.
